Home Improvement Warning Signs

A professional sales presentation does not replace verification. Slow the process down when the scope, paperwork, or payment request feels unclear.

Reviewed September 12, 2026 · Published by Home Project Guide, operated by Nfinier, LLC.

Pause when you see these patterns

  • Pressure to sign immediately or a discount that expires today
  • A demand for full payment before meaningful work begins
  • Cash, wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or payment-app-only demands
  • Blank contracts or missing scope and price terms
  • A request that the homeowner obtain permits the contractor would normally coordinate
  • Promises about insurance coverage that have not been confirmed by the insurer

Document the agreement

Keep the signed proposal, amendments, invoices, proof of payment, permits, inspection records, product information, warranties, and important messages. Confirm oral changes in writing.
