Permits, Insurance & Warranties for Home Projects

Requirements vary by address and trade, but the same verification questions help homeowners across Greater St. Louis.

Reviewed September 12, 2026 · Published by Home Project Guide, operated by Nfinier, LLC.

Permits and inspections

Ask which governmental authority has jurisdiction over the address, which permits apply, who will obtain them, and which inspections must occur. Municipal, county, utility, right-of-way, and subdivision requirements can differ.

Insurance and licensing

Request current evidence of applicable liability insurance, workers’ compensation when required, and any trade or municipal license relevant to the work. Verify important credentials with the issuing source rather than relying only on a logo or statement.

Warranties and records

Clarify who provides each warranty, what is covered, exclusions, claim procedures, transferability, and the start date. Retain the signed contract, change orders, invoices, proof of payment, permits, inspection approvals, product registrations, and warranty documents.
